Catedra Inditex o Inditex Chair 1

Aquí regreso de nuevo después de un tiempo desaparecido por estos lares. Y vuelvo para informar de algo que tal vez sólo se sepa en Galicia, ya que sólo fue publicitado en varios periódicos de esta Comunidad española, y que tal vez sea una noticia que interese a más de uno. Se trata de la llamada Cátedra Inditex, proyecto financiado por la mencionada multinacional española y avalado por las Universidades de Santiago de Compostela y de A Coruña. El primer lugar elegido para implantar y llevar a cabo este proyecto ha sido Bangladesh, y en concreto la Universidad de Dhaka, la capital de tal país. En estos posts trataré de explicar en qué consiste dicho proyecto y cuál ha sido su proceso de creación, ya que, aunque he estado siempre fuera del mismo, he participado en alguno de sus pasos. Trataré de empezar desde el principio. Here I come back after sometime being disappeared in this blog. And I come back to inform about something what maybe is only known in Galicia, because it was just advertised in several newspapers of this Spanish Community, and because maybe too many people could feel interested about it. It is about what was called Inditex Chair, a financed project by the multinational from Galicia and guaranteed by the University of Santiago de Compostela and the University of A Coruña. The first chosen place to start the project has been Bangladesh, and particularly the University of Dhaka, the capital city of the country. In those posts I will try to explain which is the base of this project and how was its process of birth, because, although I have been ever out from this project I have participated in some of its steps. I will try to start from the beginning.

Como podréis comprobar muchos de vosotros cuando vayáis a Zara o a cualquier sucursal de la multinacional gallega, la mayoría de las prendas están manufacturadas en Bangladesh, en una factoría que se encuentra fuera de la capital, en lugar que nadie de Inditex ha sabido explicarme con claridad. Como muchos ya sabéis, soy Lector visitante de español en la citada Universidad desde hace ya casi tres años, a través de la AECID, y en torno a Septiembre del año 2.009, aunque no recuerdo muy bien la fecha, alguien de Inditex consiguió mi teléfono a través de la embajada española y me llamó con el fin de que le impartiera algunas clases particulares de español, ya que su puesto así lo requería. Quedamos para una reunión en el Westin y allí configuramos más o menos, de manera oral, la estructura y la duración temporal de un posible curso intensivo. Dicho trabajador, de nombre Razaul Karim Bhuiyan, Director de la oficina de Bangladesh para Inditex, me dijo que de acuerdo con nuestra conversación necesitaba que quedara reflejado por escrito dicho programa curricular a través de un e-mail, ya que así se lo ordenaba Javier Chércoles Blázquez, su supervisor español y Director Global de Inditex. Una semana más tarde Karim me mandó un correo electrónico con un archivo adjunto que yo debía rellenar con la duración del curso, horas semanales, material bibliográfico y audiovisual, un plan curricular y el importe total del curso. Entre los objetivos del mismo se encontraban los siguientes: As most of you can certify any time you go to one Zara or any shop of the multinational Inditex, most of their clothes are manufactured in Bangladesh, in one factory outside from the capital, in a place where nobody working for Inditex could explain it is exactly. As most of you know, I have been working as Spanish Visiting Lecturer in the mentioned University for about three years, through the AECID, and around September 2009, somebody working for Inditex got my phone number in the Spanish Embassy and he called me asking to teach some private Spanish classes, because he needed them for his position in Inditex Company. We fixed a meeting in the Westin Hotel and we agreed, orally, the schedule and development of one possible intensive course. This Inditex worker, named Razaul Karim Bhuiyan, Head of the Inditex Office for Bangladesh, asked me according to this meeting and agreements, one document specifying the syllabus and schedule of the course, and I had to send it by e-mail, because like that was ordered by his Spanish supervisor and Global Director of Inditex, Javier Chercoles Blazquez. One week later Karim sent me one e-mail with one attached file which I had to fill with the estimated duration of the full course, weekly schedule, material to be used in the classes, one syllabus and the total charge amount of the course. Between the objectives of the course were the following:

- Poder establecer una comunicación fluida entre la oficina de Bangladesh y la sede en España. To establish fluent communication between the office in Bangladesh and the base in Spain.

- Conseguir el acento y la pronunciación que se puede tener en los lugares de habla hispana. To get the the correct accent and pronunciation of the places where the Spanish is spoken.

- Una comunicación diaria con el equipo comercial de España y con otros equipos en otros lugares donde se hable español. Daily communication with the commercial team in Spain and with other teams in places where the Spanish is spoken.

Yo respondí el e-mail con un currículo y especificando tanto los horarios y horas del curso como los materiales necesarios para la impartición del mismo. Esperé varios días y no obtuve ninguna respuesta, y supuse que se habían cancelado las clases. I replied the e-mail with the syllabus and the schedule of hours and necessary materials for the development of the course. I waited for several days and I didn't get any answer, and I supposed the classes had been cancelled.

Continué con mi trabajo en la Universidad hasta que unos meses más tarde (en Enero del 2010) en el Instituto de Lenguas Modernas donde yo doy las clases se me informó de que al día siguiente un grupo de Inditex tenía una reunión con el rector de la Universidad de Dhaka, el Profesor Arefin Siddique, a la cual yo estaba invitado. A ella asistí junto a Javier Chércoles, Karim, otro miembro de Inditex, tres trabajadoras de la misma empresa, un profesor de Sociología de la Universidad de Dhaka, el embajador español con su esposa y el Rector. La reunión había sido convocada para presentar al Rector un proyecto de convenio entre la multinacional gallega con la Universidad de Dhaka para implantar cursos de español en el campus, en concreto en el Instituto de Lenguas Modernas. Después de la explicación del señor Chércoles, el profesor Siddique estampó su firma. Se había aprobado lo que se llamó la Cátedra Inditex. Después de aquella reunión D. Javier me preguntó si había empezado las clases con Karim y su equipo, yo le dije que no, y obligó a Karim a comenzar esa misma semana. Se abrió una nueva cadena de e-mails entre los tres, hasta que finalmente, el señor Chércoles la dio por cerrada con ninguna respuesta porque no estaba de acuerdo con el importe de la hora de clase. I followed with my job and classes in the University until about three months later (in January 2010) in the Institute of Modern Languages where I am teaching somebody informed me that the next day one small team of Inditex had a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Arefin Siddique, and I was invited to the meeting. I attended it besides Javier Chercoles, Karim, another Inditex member, three local female workers of Inditex, one professor of the Department of Sociology of Dhaka University, the Spanish Ambassador and his wife and the Vice-Chancellor. The reason to call the meeting was to present to the Vice-Chancellor one project of agreement between Inditex and the University of Dhaka to launch Spanish courses in the Campus of the University, particularly in the Institute of Modern Languages. After the speech of Javier Chercoles, the Vice-Chancellor signed the document, giving birth to what was called Catedra Inditex. When the meeting finished, Mr. Chercoles asked me if I had started my Spanish classes with Karim and his team and I replied no, and he compelled Karim to start the classes that week. Then it was opened a new chain of e-mails between we three, until finally Mr. Chercoles closed this chain not replying my e-mail because he didn't agree with the price of the hour of class.
