Cátedra Inditex o Inditex Chair 3

El informe nunca nos llegó, lo que sí que me llegó vía e-mail, a través de Amparo Porta, fue la Convocatoria de la Cátedra Inditex, el día 27 de abril del 2011. Yo, como no perdía nada en solicitar una de las 4 plazas, solicité a la AECID, como lector visitante de español que era a través de ellos, la compatibilidad de ambas plazas, y la AECID no me puso problema alguno. Envié la documentación y pocos días más tarde Amparo Porta, como secretaria del proyecto, me informó de que yo había conseguido pasar la primera parte del proceso, que era la valoración del curriculum vitae, y debía presentarme el día 28 de junio a las 11:30 para una entrevista personal en la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. Dado que sólo tenía la compatibilidad de la AECID pero no la de la Universidad de Santiago ni de la Cátedra Inditex, le mandé un e-mail a Santiago Fernández  solicitándole información sobre este asunto, ya que en esas fechas me encontraba en Bangladesh y me salía muy caro ir a la entrevista sin tener la certeza absoluta de que podría trabajar en ambos puestos, y el director de la Cátedra me respondió que dado que se trataba de un trabajo a tiempo completo, era la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela la que debía aceptarme o no dicha compatibilidad, pero que tendría que ser a posteriori, en el caso de que fuera elegido. Así pues, decidí que no era buena idea presentarme a la entrevista. The inform didn´t never come, but what I received, by e-mail, through Amparo Porta, was the official announcement of the Inditex Chair, on 27th of April of 2011. As I was not going to loose anything if I applied for one of the 4 teacher positions, I asked to the AECID, as Spanish Visiting Lecturer I was with them, the compatibility of both positions, and the AECID replied me it was not a problem if I worked with Inditex. I sent all my documents and few days later Amparo Porta, as secretary of the project, informed me I had past the first part of the selection process, which was the assessment of my CV, and I was appointed on 28th June at 11:30am for one personal interview in the University of Santiago de Compostela. As I only had the compatibility from the AECID but not from the University of Santiago de Compostela nor form Inditex, I sent one e-mail to Santiago Fernández asking for information about this matter, because in these dates I was still in Bangladesh and to go to the interview was very expensive without being absolutely sure I could work for both organizations, Inditex and AECID, and the director of Inditex Chair replied me informing that the job for Inditex Chair was a full time job, so the University of Santiago was who had to allow or not this compatibility, but this decision should be subsequently, in the case I was selected. Then, I decided it was not a good idea to go to the interview.

El informe prometido por Carlos Piñeiro y Santiago Fernández seguía sin llegar y a la altura de mediados de julio realizamos el examen de admisión de alumnos preinscritos en el departamento de español, ya que había 364 alumnos y el departamento solamente podía aceptar 120 por tener sólo 3 profesores, sin tener noticia alguna del grupo de Inditex, cuando les habíamos informado de que por esas fechas debían hacer las pruebas de admisión de sus alumnos. The inform, which had been promised by Carlos Piñeiro and Santiago Fernández, was not coming and around half July the Spanish department made the admission test for the pre registered students in the department, because we had 364 students and the department was allowed to take only 120 because we were only three teachers, without having any new from Inditex, when we had informed them about those dates they had to make the admission test of their students.

                A principios de agosto se cancelaron las clases en el IML por el mes de Ramadán y el inicio del nuevo curso se pospuso al mes de septiembre. Continuamos sin tener noticia alguna del grupo de Inditex, y en esa época, la embajada cambia de embajador y de Cónsul o Segundo de abordo. At the beginning of August the classes in IML were cancelled all the month of Ramadan and the beginning of the new course was delayed to September. We had still not any new from Inditex group, and in those days, the Spanish Embassy changed the Ambassador and the Head Deputy of Mission.

                Casi a finales del mes mi ex colega y Jefe del Departamento me informó de que los de la Cátedra Inditex ya habían llegado y querían tener una reunión con él, para que les informara sobre los pasos que debían llevar a cabo para iniciar las clases. Les aconsejó que debían realizar un escrito dirigido al director del IML solicitándole permiso para iniciar los cursos. Así lo hicieron y a los tres días Amparo Porta volvió a solicitar una reunión con mi ex colega, el cual, sin presentar pega alguna, se reunió con ella y su grupo de profesores. La coordinadora de la Cátedra le preguntó a mi ex colega si tenía alguna noticia sobre el Director y éste le dijo que no, ninguna, y Amparo perdió las formas y le comenzó a recriminar que aquello era una falta de respeto hacia ella, hacia su grupo de profesores y hacia Inditex, que era inaceptable estar tres días sin noticia alguna por parte de la dirección del IML. Mi ex colega, indignado por la disposición de la coordinadora de la Cátedra, dio concluida la reunión y se marchó. Almost at the end of month my ex colleague and Head of Spanish Department informed me that the people of the Inditex Chair had arrived and they wanted to join a meeting with him to inform them about the steps to take for starting their classes. My ex colleague advised them they should write a letter to the Director of the IML asking for the permission to start the courses. They did it and three days later Amparo Porta called again to my ex colleague for a new meeting, who, without making any problem, met again with her and her group of teachers. The coordinator of the Chair asked to my ex colleague if he had some new from the Director and he said that no, no new, and Amparo started to loose the manners with him and started to reproach to him it was a disrespectful treatment for her and her team and also for Inditex, she said to him it was unacceptable to be waiting three days without any new from the Director of IML. My ex colleague, indignant for the treatment of the coordinator of the Inditex Chair, finished the meeting and left.

Dos horas más tarde Amparo Porta Rivas volvió a efectuarle una nueva llamada telefónica y le informó de que ella y el Director del IML se habían reunido con el Honorable Rector Arefin Siddique y que éste había decidido, de viva voz, que 90 de nuestros alumnos debían ser trasladados a su centro y que sus profesores iban a dar las clases, y que le debía dar una respuesta en aquel mismo instante de si aceptaba o no la idea del Rector, y mi colega, fascinado por la insólita noticia, le pidió tiempo para preguntarnos a los otros dos profesores del departamento si aceptábamos o no, y ésta le dijo que debía darle una respuesta cuanto antes. Acto seguido Amparo Porta envió un e-mail con copia al rector, el Director del IML y el Jefe de Departamento de Español informando sobre la solución ideada por el señor rector. Two hours later Amparo Rivas called again to my ex colleague and she informed him that she and the Director of IML had met with the Honourable Vice-Chancellor Arefin Siddique and he had decided, by viva voce, that 90 of our students had to shift to their center and that their teachers was going to teach them, and my ex colleague had to give an answer in that same moment, about if he accepted or not this idea of the Vice-Chancellor, and my ex colleague, astonished by the new, asked to her for some time because he needed to ask to the other two teachers of the department if we accepted or not, and she forced him to give one quick answer as soon as possible. Some minutes later, Amparo Porta sent one e-mail with copy to the Vice-Chancellor, the Director of the IML and to the Head of the Spanish Department informing about the solution thought up by the Vice-Chancellor.

                El Jefe de Departamento nos piió a los otros dos profesores reunirnos los tres profesores del departamento esa misma tarde y cuando nos explicó la solución ofrecida por el señor Siddique, ninguno de los tres aceptamos tal locura, y realizamos una carta urgente con la firma de los tres para el Director del IML, solicitando la convocatoria de una reunión con el comité académico del Instituto, y se registró la entrega en el despacho del Director. Casi una semana más tarde, como no había noticia alguna por parte del Director, fuimos a su despacho y éste nos informó de que nunca había visto esa carta, se llamó a su secretario y se le preguntó dónde se encontraba el mencionado documento, y el secretario le informó al señor Director de que él mismo había dejado la carta en su mesa hacía tres días, y el Director volvió a negarlo. Mi ex colega le indicó que no había problema, que como la copia estaba en nuestro ordenador del despacho se le podía imprimir una copia. Ya de vuelta en nuestro Departamento, el secretario del Director nos realizó una llamada interna y nos informó de que el director ya había encontrado la carta, y volvimos a su despacho. The Head of the Spanish Department asked us to the other two teachers to join a meeting just this afternoon and when he explained the idea thought up by the Vice-Chancellor Mr. Siddique, no one of the three accepted that madness, and we wrote one urgent letter to the Director of IML signed by the three, asking for the announcement of one meeting with the academic committee of the Institute, and the letter was registred as delivered in the Director´s office room. Almost one week later, as we hadn´t any new from the Director, we went to his office and he informed that he had never seen this document, we called to his secretary and we asked to him where this letter was, and the secretary informed to the Director that he had left the letter in his table three days before, and the Director denied it again. My ex colleague said it was not a problem and as the copy of the letter was saved in the computer of our room we could print it out again. When we were back in our office room, the Director´s secretary called us to the internal phone and informed us that the Director had found the letter and we came back to his office.

         El día 12 de octubre fui invitado (no así mi ex colega y Jefe de Departamento) a la celebración del día nacional en la residencia de su Excelencia el nuevo embajador de España para Bangladesh y en ella me encontré por sorpresa con el señor Carlos Piñeiro, que, después de saludarme, me preguntó por qué no me había presentado a la entrevista para la selección y le expliqué el problema de las compatibilidades, y me dijo que fue una pena porque ya yo estaba casi elegido antes de realizar la entrevista, dada mi experiencia docente y mi personal vivencia en Bangladesh. Le pregunté cómo andaba la Cátedra y me respondió que la tenían un poco enquistada, pero que iban a tratar de hacer todo lo posible para empezar cuanto antes con las clases. Yo le indiqué que el problema había sido que habían llegado muy tarde y que encontrar alumnado en la Universidad no era una tarea fácil, y me respondió que tenía completamente toda la razón y que dada la situación, debían buscar otras soluciones. Entonces se excusó porque debía ir a saludar a alguien y antes de despedirse me dijo que le gustaría tener una reunión conmigo al día siguiente, y le respondí que por supuesto, cuando quisiera, que ya sabía dónde estaban mi despacho y mi aula en la Universidad. On 12th October I was invited (not my ex colleague and Head of the Spanish Department) to the celebration of the national Spanish day in the residence of His Excellency the new Spanish Ambassador for Bangladesh and over there I met surprisely with Mr. Carlos Piñeiro, who, after greeting me, asked to me why I hadn´t come to the interview for the selection of the Inditex Chair teachers and I explained the problem of the incompatibilities, and he told me it was really a pity because I was almost selected before joining the interview, because I had good professional experience as a teacher and because I had a good life experience in Bangladesh. I asked to him how was going the Inditex Chair and he replied me it was few blocked, but they were trying to do everything was in their hands to start as soon as possible with the classes. I said to him that the problem was they had come very late and to find students in the University wasn´t an easy task, and he replied me I was totally right and in this situation they should find other solutions. Then he excused himself because he had to greet somebody and before his farewell he told me he would like to have a meeting with me the next day, and I said to him I didn´t have any problem, and when he wanted to meet me he knew where my office room and classroom were in the University.

     El día 13 de octubre justo cuando acababa una de mis clases apareció de nuevo el señor Carlos Piñeiro y entró en mi clase, preguntándome si tenía un rato libre, y le dije que quería ir a comprar ciertas cosas, pero tenía al menos media hora, y me pidió que le acompañase a la segunda planta del IML, donde está instalada la Cátedra Inditex, porque Santiago Fernández quería tener una reunión conmigo. Antes de cerrar el aula, Carlos me comentó algo negativo sobre el estado de la habitación, ya que para él no era muy correcta para impartir clases porque no estaba muy bien habilitada. Yo mantuve silencio, él no es profesor de español. Entramos en el despacho del departamento y volvió a hacer sus gratuitos comentarios sobre el estado de las mesas y libros, y me ofreció la posibilidad de trabajar y usar sus instalaciones, con amplios despachos para nosotros, mejores mesas y aire acondicionado. Yo, de nuevo, mantuve silencio, dejé el libro que usamos en la clase en la mesa y le dije que teníamos que salir. On 13th October just when I was finishing one of my classes Mr. Carlos Piñeiro appeared newly and he came inside my classroom, asking if I had some free time, and I told him I needed to buy some things, but I had at least half an hour, and he asked me to go with him to the second level of IML, where the Inditex Chair is, because Santiago Fernández wanted to join a meeting with me. Before closing the classroom Mr. Carlos gave some negative comments about the status of the room, because he thought it was not a good place to teach. I was in silence, he is not a Spanish teacher. We came inside of the Department´s room and he made again the free comments about the status of the tables and books, and he offered me the possibility to work and to use their rooms, with big office rooms for us, better tables and better air conditionings. I was newly in silence, I left the book we used in the classes in the table and I said to him we might come out from there.

               Ya en la segunda planta, en el centro de la Cátedra, me reencontré con Santiago Fernández Mosquera, Amparo Porta Rivas y los cuatro profesores elegidos para formar el grupo, que estaban rellenando un formulario en la sala de juntas. A Amparo le costó saludarme. Santiago y Carlos me invitaron a trasladarnos al despacho de la dirección, y allí nos fuimos. Ya sentados, el señor Carlos Piñeiro me volvió a ofrecer la posibilidad de movernos a su centro, ya que ellos tenían mejores instalaciones que nosotros, los despachos eran mejores, y ya que estaban allí en la Universidad de Dhaka, en el mismo edificio donde nosotros tenemos el despacho del departamento de español, que nos aprovechásemos absolutamente de todas sus comodidades. Yo le dije que no podíamos movernos de allí porque tanto el Jefe de Departamento como yo teníamos miedo de perder el departamento, y Santiago Fernández me ratificó, diciendo que nos entendía perfectamente, ya que él es Jefe de departamento y catedrático de universidad, con lo que entendía perfectamente nuestros temores. Sin embargo, Carlos volvió a insistir en que si alguna vez queríamos ir al centro de la Cátedra a estudiar o a hojear algún libro de su biblioteca que no dudáramos en hacerlo. Santiago, por su parte, me preguntó qué puesto tenía mi colega en la Universidad de Dhaka, y le respondí que era Profesor Asistente y Jefe del departamento, y que, además, estaba estudiando el doctorado, y entonces el señor Fernández Mosquera me comentó que informara a mi colega también sobre la preciada posibilidad de ir a la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela a acabar sus estudios de doctorado, porque la idea de la Cátedra era que, a medida que el proyecto se fuera haciendo grande, abriría y repartiría una serie de ayudas a alumnos y profesores, dentro del ámbito académico y de intercambio. Yo le comenté que le informaría a mi colega de lo que me decían y les dije que no podía estar mucho más tiempo con ellos, ya que tenía un poco de prisa. Entonces, el señor Fernández Mosquera me dijo, como si estuviéramos hablando ya tiempo atrás sobre ciertas cosas, que de lo que se trataba era de “compartir” los estudiantes del departamento de español. Yo, como no entendí muy bien el cambio que había sufrido la conversación, le indiqué con un gesto de la cara que no comprendía por qué me decía eso. Y me volvió a decir lo mismo, palabra por palabra. En ese momento capté cuál era la razón de la reunión. Yo, después de un silencio que me dio tiempo a meditar, les di mi opinión sobre lo que estaba ocurriendo, que no era otra distinta a la que le había comentado el día anterior a Carlos, que habían llegado tarde, muy tarde, y que encontrar alumnos en la Universidad y en Bangladesh suponía un largo proceso, pero que, de todas formas, les proponía una solución que él ya sabía: el departamento de español había tenido preinscritos 365 alumnos pero de ellos sólo habíamos podido seleccionar a 120, con lo que casi 245 alumnos se habían quedado fuera y que no entendía cómo nadie les había dado esa información anteriormente. El señor Carlos Piñeiro se anotó esa idea en su agenda, mientras Santiago Fernández señalaba que recordaba que esa solución ya se había hablado anteriormente en alguna reunión. Me informaron de que iban a empezar a mover las piezas de esa estrategia para tratar de localizar a esos estudiantes que se quedaron fuera de admisión, aunque ellos regresaban a España al día siguiente, y antes de que acabara la reunión me permití preguntarles si la Cátedra sólo tenía la vigencia de este curso académico o si se volvería a convocar para el curso siguiente, y el director de la misma, el señor Fernández Mosquera, me informó de que por supuesto el proyecto tenía afán de continuidad y que, por supuesto, el año próximo, una vez se me hubiera acabado el lectorado con la AECID, podía solicitar una de esas cuatro plazas, en el caso de que alguno de los cuatro profesores no hubiera querido renovar su contrato de la Cátedra. Yo le comenté que me lo pensaría y dimos por concluida la reunión. When we were in the second level I met up again with Santiago Fernandez Mosquera, Amparo Porta and the four selected teachers who were the Inditex Chair, who were filling up one form in the meeting room. It was very hard for Amparo to greet me. Carlos Piñeiro and Santiago Fernández invited me to move to the director room of the Inditex Chair center, and we went there. When we were in the table, Carlos proposed me again to shift over their center because they had better classrooms and rooms than us, and as they were in Dhaka University and even in the same building of our Spanish department, we should use their center and all their comfortabilities without any problem. I replied that nor me nor my ex colleague could shift over their center because we were afraid to loose our department and Santiago Fernández ratified me, telling that he perfectly understood us because he is also Head of his department and titular teacher of univeristy, so he understood perfectly our fears. However Carlos Piñeiro insisted telling if we needed to go to their library or to their classrooms we could go without any problem. Then Santiago asked which position had my ex colleague in the University of Dhaka, and I replied he was an Assistant Teacher and Head of the Department, and also I informed him he was studying the PhD, and then, Mr. Fernandez Mosquera gave me the idea to inform to my ex colleague about the valued possibility to go to the University of Santiago de Compostela to complete his studies of PhD, because the idea of the Inditex Chair is, according that the project will grow up and will develop, it will open and it will provide some scholarships for teachers and students, in one academic sphere and exchange. I told him I would inform to my ex colleague and that I couldn't be for long with them, because I had things to do and I was in a hurry.  Then Mr. Fernandez Mosquera, as if we were talking about this matter for long before, told me that their idea was to "share" the students of the Spanish department. As I didn't understand the change that the conversation had taken, I changed my face and he understood I was missing something. And he repeated the same sentence, word by word. In that moment I caught what was the reason of the meeting. After a silence, which let me time to think, I gave my honest opinion about everything what was happening, the same idea what I had told to Carlos the day before, and it was they had been late, too late, and they wanted to find students in the University and that matter took a long process in Bangladesh, but anyways, I proposed to them to take one solution which they already knew: the Spanish department had 365 pre registered students, but the department could take just 120, so almost 245 students had not could register with us, and I complained telling them I didn´t understand how nobody didn´t give to them this information. Mr. Carlos Piñeiro wrote this idea in his notebook, while Mr. Santiago remembered that we had talked about that idea in some meeting some time ago. Then they informed me they were going to start to move the pieces of this strategy and they were going to try to find all those students who couldn´t register in our department, though they had to leave to Spain the next day, and before the meeting finished I took the license to ask them if the Inditex Chair was just open for that academic course or if they had the idea to announce a new contract for the next course, and its director, Mr. Santiago Fernandez Mosquera, told me that the Inditex Chair project had the effort to continue, and of course, once my scholarship with the AECID finished, they recommended to me to apply for their four Spanish teacher positions, in the case that one of their teachers will not want to renew the contract with them. I asked to them to let me time to think about it and we finished the meeting.
